Research Projects

The research projects D-I to D-VII were supported by a collective grant from the National Scientific Research Committee, No. 695/E71. The research projects listed below represent only leading topics, cumulating individually proposed projects, re-flected in the published papers.

Apart from that, 1 individual grant financed by the same Committee was run.

D-I Short- and long-range health effects of practising sports

Studies on this project have focused on the following topics: respiratory and cardiovascular functions (including echocardiography and heart rate variability analysis) in athletes and sedentary subjects, including former athletes; this included the effects of illicit use of anabolic-androgenic steroids; static and dynamic exertions - their effects on the cardiovascular system; abnormalities in the skeletal system in tall young competitive athletes.

D-II Factors modifying the adaptive capacity to maximal physical exercise

This project included studies on biochemical, physiological and hormonal alterations induced by various modes of exercise; effect of involuntary static exertion or of high altitude training on work capacity; motor and coordinative development of children.

D-III Homeostatic changes induced by physical training

Training-induced changes in selected biochemical, physiological and hormonal variables; studies on diet components (Ca, P, microelements) and electrolyte balance; circulating transferrin receptor as an index of iron stores; nutrition knowledge of athletes.

D-IV Somatic and biomechanical characteristics of athletes representing various sports

Somatic characteristics and muscle force topography in athletes; relations between force, power output and parameters of vertical jump.

D-V Technology and modes of sports training

This project focused on constructing new measuring devices and the necessary software and on the cinematographic analysis of ball throws.

D-VI Psychological conditions of sport achievements

The project focused on individual and team-oriented task motivation and on psychological mechanisms of adaptation to high physical loads and stress.

D-VII Detection of abuse of banned pharmaceuticals in athletes

The project includes studies on the T:Et ratio (in retrospect and as affected by steroidogenesis disorders), ketoconazole test in suspected anabolic steroid abuse, urinary steroid profile and the abuse of marihuana.
